We wanted to share a quick meditation guide to help clear your mind and calm your spirit. Getting back to work after having time off can be stressful and overwhelming. Sometimes, adding a little meditation is just what we need to get through the rest of our day. There is no right or wrong way to meditate and it's important to find what works best for you.
For many people who struggle to meditate, they believe they cannot quiet their minds and stop the thoughts from coming into their heads. If you ask an experienced meditator, they will tell you to let the thoughts come in. The thoughts arrive, then you let them go.
Where to begin.
Step 1: Purchase a journal to write down your thoughts and how you feel after each mediation practice. This will also help you keep track of how your timing grows.
Step 2: Start with a five-minute meditation. Just call it your quiet time! Many meditation gurus suggest that your feet touch the floor, but others think it is okay to lie down. My suggestion: sit up straight, but comfortable. Allow your feet to touch the earth. Bottom line - whatever works for YOU is going to be the RIGHT way to meditate.
Step 3: A minute-by-minute guide.
Minute 1 - Get comfy and find the rhythm of your breath.
Minute 2 - Get in deeper with that rhythm of your breath; in through the nose, out through the mouth…allowing the exhale to be a little bit longer than the inhale.
Minute 3 - Try to allow this pattern - this rhythm - to be natural. Don’t think about it too much, just breathe. In and out.
Minute 4 - Let thoughts drift in and be okay with that. Let them go out as quickly as they come in.
Minute 5 - Think about all the things you are grateful for and those things that bring you joy.
See how this quick five-minute meditation goes for awhile. Try adding more time to your meditation after you establish a pattern, but don’t get caught up in the minute-by-minute. Obviously you don’t want to keep checking the clock! The process will get easier as time goes on. What's important is to make a habit of it! Find the time and place that works. Sitting in your car before work, at your desk, or even first thing in the morning.
If you get off track, don’t beat yourself up...get back on track! What happens to us over-achieving, super-active, Type-A personalities is that we think we are not doing it right! You cannot meditate incorrectly! Meditation is the language of the soul.
